For burns that cross the anterior hip joint and/or medial.
To assist in positioning the hip joints into abduction and neutral rotation, thereby decreasing the risk of flexion and adduction contractures at the hip.
- Keep the lower half of the bed flat.
- Abduct the patients legs.
- Place the pillow between the legs, as far proximal as possible.
- Fasten Velcro straps.
Splint should be worn both pre and post grafting.
(STSG and Integra). Wear time is up to 20 hours per day as tolerated, with hour rests every three hours. (Rests are optional if patient can tolerate prolonged wear.)
Monitor for redness, especially along the Velcro straps. Monitor for maceration. A blanket can be used to cover the pillow should maceration become an issue. Should this occur, discontinue use and contact P.T./O.T.
