Recommendation: For burns that cross the elbow joint.

Purpose: To aid in the positioning of the elbow into extension, thereby decreasing the risk of flexion contractures.

How to Apply:

  1. Position the patient into full elbow extension. (Attempt to apply dressings so as not to limit full extension.)
  2. Position the splint on the anterior side of the patients arm.
  3. Fasten Velcro straps. (Option: ace wrap splint into place, wrapping DISTAL to PROXIMAL.)

Recommended: Splint should be worn both pre and post grafting.

Wear Time: (STSG and Integra). Wear time is up to 20 hours per day as tolerated, with hour rests every three hours. (Rests are optional if patient can tolerate prolonged wear.) After grafting the splint should be worn at all times for five days.

Cautions: Skin checks should include, but not be limited to, the anterior surface of the forearm and along the Velcro straps. Check for redness and/or poor capillary refill. Should any of the above occur, remove the splint and contact P.T./O.T.
