Recommendation: For burns along the neck.

Purpose: To assist in the positioning of the patients neck in a neutral and slightly extended position, thereby decreasing the risk of contracture.

How to Apply:

  1. Roll one to two towels.
  2. Position the patients neck into neutral.
  3. Place the rolled towel(s) behind the neck.

Recommended Wear Time: Roll should be worn both pre and post grafting (STSG and Integra). Wear time is up to 20 hours per day as tolerated, with hour rests every three hours. (Rests are optional if patient can tolerate prolonged wear.) Ideally the towel roll should be worn whenever the patient is resting in bed.

Cautions: Make certain that the patients neck is not so far extended as to allow the bottom jaw to drop open. If this is not preventable by reducing the size of the towel roll, a soft cervical collar may be indicated. Check for skin integrity behind the neck. Should skin breakdown occur discontinue use and contact P.T./O.T. NO PILLOW.
